mamma mia!

Mostly we deal with kids stuff – toys, games, books, etc –  geared especially to the 0-14 set.  But we are nearing the end of April and that can only mean one thing… Mother’s Day is SOON!  Have you thought of a way to celebrate the woman who gave you life yet?

We’ve been hosting a lot of birthday parties in our ceramics studio lately and they’re an absolute blast.  But more than the fun we have at the parties (both us and the kids!) is the impression the end results leave.  Everytime we pull the plates and mugs out of our kiln we are blown away by what these creative wizards have made with a little paint and a lot of imagination.  Some of these kids are really talented!  Which got me thinking… wouldn’t it be a great gift for mom?  A hand-painted mug to drink her coffee out of each morning made especially for her?  Perfect!

Beautiful, lasting and heartfelt gifts are hard to come by, but if you ask me, ceramics fit the bill pretty well.

earth day/whole lotta love

Ah, Earth Day. The one day out of 365 we’re asked to really take pause and think about the impact we have on the earth (you know, that big round mass beneath our feet that sustains all life on the planet in every way, shape and form?). Seems a bit odd – a bit of a half-hearted nod to the most important thing in all our lives – but I back it 100% and in the final analysis I think it’s worthwhile. It wasn’t too long ago that you would have heard me whistling a different tune, though. Not that I don’t support Earth and think it’s important to raise the issues surrounding sustainability and the environment – I do. It’s just that I might have said Earth Day was a bit of a wasted day. So what changed my mind?

I recently watched Wall-E. For those who haven’t seen it, it’s set in the future and tells the story of a robot left on earth to clean up the mess the humans leave behind. The movie itself is heartwarming and well-told with a decidedly pro-environmentalism message. We’re killing Earth (and ourselves) and only we can really fix it. But it wasn’t the movie that changed my mind. It was a discussion I had with a friend after the fact. He was asking me how I felt about the message, did I think they’d gone too far with their moral outrage and were they brainwashing kids with their earth agenda? But then he said something else (and here I’m paraphrasing):

“When we were kids, the big thing was ‘Don’t Litter’. That was the huge crime you could commit against nature and now that I’m an adult, no one litters. The only thing I ever see on the ground is cigarette butts [ed. note: that still counts as littering] and I don’t know anyone that would willingly throw something on the ground instead of in a waste bin. Then the message was reduce, reuse recycle and now that is catching on, so maybe we should be pushing it further. Because twenty years from now, maybe all those things will seem almost impossible to have thought of any other way.”

I thought that was a really solid point. Back when we were kids, I bet the initial message of “Don’t Litter!” was seen as such a tiny thing it couldn’t possibly have an impact. But now we don’t see a whole lot of trash around these parts. And already the three R’s are taking hold – I bet you’d be hard pressed to find a kid under 10 that doesn’t recycle at every opportunity. So maybe down the line we’ll be saying, “Who wouldn’t turn their lights out/drive an electric car/use their community compost powered hovercraft to purify water?” (or whatever the future may hold. I’m patenting that idea, by the way. Don’t try to steal it…) One day may not seem like much now, but maybe when that becomes normal we’ll up it to a week, and then a month and then… who knows?

Plus, if you take the ‘h’ at the end of earth and move it to the front of the word, you get heart, and what’s not to love about a little word game and a great big world?

did you know…?

Lubies are back! And they are for sure my pick of the week (of the decade, possibly) for a must-have toy. They’re soft, round, plush, adorable, hilarious, funny and fun… and best of all they come with an interesting and true tidbit of info about the animal! Check out www.lubieland.com to see all the varities available on their super fun website and while there, you just might learn something new about your favourite pet! (Did you know adult giraffes have a 27-inch long tongue? Or that cats’ nosepade have a unique pattern like a finger print? Or horses rest standing up?)

I love Lubies!!

art attack!

The onset of spring has meant oodles and oodles of birthday parties for us in our ceramics zone – and that has meant oodles and oodles of beautiful creative work coming straight from the imaginations of kids.

Check back soon to see some more fantastic examples of kids at play and feel free to submit some or your favourite ideas for creative play in the comments section or send us pictures of home-made art projects and we’ll post them on the site!

anti-bullying day

Tomorrow, April 14th 2010, is Anti-Bullying Day here in Canada. The best part about working in a toy store is seeing kids playing and learning without any fear or concern of being judged. When you find the right toy for the right kid, everything else just kind of slips away and they get lost to a world of imagination and freedom and fun. The worst part about spending this much time with kids and youth is seeing a kid who is unable to let themselves have fun, one who faces ridicule and bullying from their peers for any choices they make without cause or reaon.

Bullying is not just an unpleasant experience that is part of the lives of many kids, but a serious issue that can have lasting psychological effects on an individual for a lifetime. With the advent of social networking sites and the pervasiveness of blogs, text messaging and real-time life updates on sites like Twitter and Facebook, kids are faced with even more ways for bullying to enter and consume their lives.

Bullying is often thought of as being pushed around at school. But locking someone in a bathroom stall or pushing them down in the school-yard are just physical examples of an issue that goes much deeper. Making fun of, taunting and excluding are some of the forms of psychological bullying some kids face everyday. It’s this kind of bullying that can make them think that even the simple act of picking a toy they want to play with is risky and fraught with social ramifications they may not wish to face.

Anti-bullying day is a day created to not only raise awareness on the many forms bullying can take, but also to show your support from those who have to face bullying in their lives on a regular basis. Wear pink tomorrow to show you care.

Everything old…

I’ve spent a lot of time lately talking about new things. Lately, if it’s not the new flowers (and the cool new outdoor toys to go along with them!) it’s the new traditions being ushered in by a new generation. I guess I can pin it on springtime and the traditions of growth and new life that go along with it. But sometimes all we really want is something old. Or maybe not old, but something familiar, something that maybe inspires a bit of nostalgia in us.

It’s feeling like one of those days when people just want to get back to the simpler pleasures – I blame it on a strong wind, making us all feel just a little smaller, a little younger – and play with some old fashioned wood blocks or a pinwheel that catches the wind (and our imaginations) just so…

traditional offerings

For the first time ever, my family did not have an Easter dinner.

In fact, with one sister and her husband going to his parents house, my parents being sick as dogs this past week and my brother in Toronto, the only member of my family who actively pursued our family traditions (mass amounts of chocolate followed by mass amounts of dinner) was my other sister. She had Easter baskets and an Easter dinner for her whole household (including her dog).
You'd get him an Easter basket too, admit it!

I can only barely remember the Easters of my childhood – mostly fuelled with so much sugar my brain couldn’t possibly hold on to the specifics of the holiday itself – but it was definitely a time when we got together as a family and had a nice meal together. What happened? I guess the simple truth is, we’ve gotten older. We still hold to some of those big traditions of my childhood – not one of us has ever missed being with the family at Christmas – but a lot of those traditions are changing. Long gone are the days when my parents got me a rose on Valentine’s day or we put up fake spider’s webs for Hallowe’en. Easter dinner seems to be the latest in a long line of tradition casualties. But maybe they’re not gone, just different. Santa now comes to visit my niece and the Easter bunny is bringing chocolate eggs and jellybeans to her, not me. So even though things are different for me, in a lot of ways they are the same. Now there’s a chance for the next generation of kids to lose themselves in the sugar and for my siblings and I to help make those years as magical and fun as possible. It’s time for some new traditions to take hold.

What are some of the traditions you hold dearest? What will you pass on to your children? Are there any traditions – like my family and Christmas – that show no signs of stopping no matter how many years pass or how many obstacles are in the way? Feel free to post in the comments!

young at heart

A few days ago in the late afternoon, a man came in the store and began looking at our remote control helicopters. After discussing with Philip and I the merits of each of the different options we had available, he settled on our Apache style copter and was on his way. Only he wasn’t getting the helicopter for his kids or a nephew or niece – it was his birthday and he decided to get himself a little gift!

I love that here he was, a grown man with a steady career and all the responsibilities and expectations that come with adulthood, deciding to do something fun for himself and unabashedly buying a toy to celebrate getting older! And that’s what we love to see at Cowboys and Angels.

We opened a toy store for a lot of reasons. We cherish and fondly remember the carefree days of youth; we think children flourish when given creative outlets and opportunities to learn through play and imagination; we like to play with toys and needed a plausible excuse for spending all day every day having fun…

The one I thought of today was this: there are a lot of really difficult things everyone deals with in their day to day lives and it can be stressful managing the pressures of work and family. Frankly, we believe taking a break to play and have a little fun – whether you’re six or sixty or somewhere in between – makes facing those challenges a little easier and can even give you the boost you need to keep going. With that in mind, take a look at this video from our Youtube channel…

Now get outside and have some fun!

Forgive us this bit of shameless hometown idolizing, but Mr. Bieksa and his lovely family came by the store today and were just fantastic! Stop by anytime, Bieksa (especially when Jesse isn’t here because we like making him hockey-jealous!)
