Well friends, we’re approaching the end of my guest week. Apologies for my negligence in posting yesterday, it was a busy one for me – but they all seem to be lately, don’t they? Makes me long for the summer…

Except that my summers are always the busiest times of my year! I guess I’m longing for those long, lazy days when I was a kid. No job, no responsibilities, just days and days of hanging out poolside at Maple Grove Park with Melissa and running through the sprinkler with my siblings and jumping on a trampoline with water at Kelly’s house (summers were always too hot for me so if I was outside, it was near water!)

But here’s the thing: as I type this out, all I can truly remember was the endless feeling of boredom. Sure, there were some fun times. And I know I loved being able to sleep-in, even though I’ve never really been any good at it. But I can remember asking my mom day after day what I should do. “Mom, I’m bored.” “Mom, what can I do today?” “Moooooooom!” Ugh. She must have hated summers! Here we all were, hanging around the house and just whining all the time. In the past I’ve blogged about some sweet summer toys that are sure to keep the little ones occupied – my favourite still being the sprinklers (I told you, summer = too hot!) – but today, today I champion getting them not only out of the house, but out of your hair for an hour or two! After the incredible response we got from our summer camps last year, we’re bringing them back. Now, I know it’s only February and summer seems a long ways off, but I say get a head start on your answers to all those “What should I do today, Mom?” questions.

The dates of our camps are officially up on the website and there’s no time like the present to pencil those into the calendar. That way you can relax today, knowing your kids have something fun to do this summer!

Today I’ve been working on going through the mountains of comments the boys didn’t know how to access over the last eight months and in doing so, I’ve had the chance to re-visit a lot of the posts I made last year. It became clear to me that what working at Cowboys and Angels meant to me was accessing my inner kid! So many posts about wanting toys designed for the young folk (alright, I’m barely not a young folk myself, but still… I’m beyond my toy years!) and delighting in the delight kids find in the simple things. So I’ve made a decision – even as I take on the renovation of this webpage and buy a fancy new “work” shirt – when I grow up, I want to be a kid (at least at heart).

Hello again, friends! I hope you don’t mind me dropping in and asking to be your Valentine this week…

I know I bid farewell not three posts ago, but I’m going to be guest blogging for the next week or so as we get this site all geared up for a big winter surprise! Plus, it’s been something like eight months and the boys only managed one post? I’m not one for gender bias, but the boys really dropped the ball on this one. I can’t wait to teach the new girls how to use the blog and Twitter so that we get some proper updates on the go, amIright?! In fairness to the fine gents of Cowboys and Angels, the store is looking AMAZING these days (I may not have a gender bias, but I have an admitted toy store bias and it is strongly in favour of Cowboys and Angels! So much cute stuff! Thank goodness I have a niece AND nephew to spoil while I’m home…). Since I’ve been away they have gotten a ton of new stock and new product lines in – I have been in the store twice for extended periods of time and I still haven’t seen it all!

In the coming days there will be some small but very necessary changes to our webpage, the return of our Twitter account and an update of the facebook page. Keep your eyes peeled for changes to our photography and ceramics pages especially! It feels good to be back! Happy Valentine’s Day!

And I know the saying is “April showers…”, but there’s been so much rain lately that it just felt right to go with February, no?

June/July 2010 mark the 19th edition of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, this year taking place in South Africa. Us football (or soccer if you prefer) fans wait four years for a tournament of this nature and this year I am struggling with early morning games (two 4:30 a.m. games for the Netherlands have left me zombie-esq at the store – hopefully it hasn’t shown too much!) and low scoring matches. This year’s tournament has fired up a number of key questions for fans to ponder over: While the upsets are nice, how long will they last? How many of the usual “power house” squads be looking in from the outside in the Round of 16? Will Philip’s England squad rebound after two mediocre showings to move on? Can my Nederlands squad finally shake the “choke artist” label? Can Germany shake their loss to Serbia to get out of their group? What’s happening with the French squad?!? When will Messi finally score for Argentina? The list goes on.
One thing that is for certain is something I have seen more and more of in my travels around the city: people of all ages getting out to the pitch to enjoy a kick-about with friends. Be it pick-up groups of six or 16 the pitches around Vancouver are being used night-in and night-out which goes to show how much the World Cup can promote the sport.
Well it’s not just the World Cup doing all the work – we’re trying to do our part as well! We’ve got a number of soccer balls in store now for people of all ages. Sizes 3, 4 and 5 Nike balls, as well as a size 3 Toy Story Glow-In-The-Dark ball for the kids! (If they only made an adult sized one so me and my friends wouldn’t struggle seeing the ball when the lights go out on our Thursday late-night meetings!)

I’ll leave you with a final note: get out to the pitch, have fun keeping in shape and enjoy the Beautiful Game!

(P.S. If you see me glued to the opposing computer screen in the shop I am watching the World Cup, but feel free to interrupt me and ask for any assistance you need!! I can also fill you in on who is playing and what the score is too if you are interested!)

Today, after six months here at Cowboys and Angels (The Greatest Toy Store in Vancouver, if you ask me) and after spending about half that time as the site manager/blog writer/Twitter and Facebook coordinator for all things C&A, I finally introduce myself. Also, today is my last day.

Seems a bit counter-intuitive to introduce myself just as I leave, but I’ve never been one to do what seems normal (I wouldn’t work at a toy store if I did!) and I figured better late than never.

My name is Leigh and I grew up right here in Kerrisdale. After nearly seven years of living away from home, I moved back to Vancouver last fall and promptly got a job here at Cowboys and Angels. Everything I’ve written on this blog is true: I have an adorable niece who happens to be part of the gallery on the website, Find It! was the biggest staff craze of the past several months, and I do have an unabashed crush on Kevin Bieksa of the Vancouver Canucks. I have also truly enjoyed my time here at Cowboys and Angels. I’ve met so many wonderful families and kids and seen so many old friends and parents of those friends shopping for grandkid gifts… it’s been truly wonderful.

Thank you to my co-workers for their friendship, thank you to Philip and Polly for their generosity and kindness, and thank you to you for reading and contributing! Have an incredible summer and go play!
